- The Synagogue
Survival Kit: "In an effort to counter the confusion and isolation
often experienced by a novice synagogue-goer, as well as by many who
regularly attend synagogue, The Synagogue Survival Kit offers
introductions and instructions for all aspects of the synagogue
experience. Always mindful of the sophisticated adult reader with little
or no Jewish background, Jordan Wagner clearly and comprehensively
explains, in a non-dogmatic way, the practices, vocabulary, objects, and
attitudes that one can expect to find in any synagogue... The book begins
with the most basic aspects of feeling comfortable in synagogue, such as
how to dress, when to stand and when to sit, and handling a prayerbook.
It goes on to discuss some material elements of Jewish worship, such as
wearing a head covering during prayer, the organization of the sanctuary,
and the significance of ritual objects like the mezzuzah and the Torah
ark. Hebrew and Yiddish vocabulary is also provided, including both
meaning and pronounciation, so the reader can be confident using the terms
appropriately. The focus then turns to the prayer service, including an
in-depth exploration of the major Jewish prayers to help the beginner take
part, rather than just "follow along". An appendix of page numbering in
the most popular prayerbooks for Friday night and Saturday morning
services also helps worshippers to navigate the service."
- free
on-line transliterated Siddur: "color coding to indicate what is

- The
Abayudaya Jews of Uganda: "Nestled within the rolling hills and
valleys of Eastern Uganda lives a community of 500 black Ugandans who
practice Judaism, observing Jewish holidays, singing Hebrew songs , dining
under the Laws of Kashrut, and keeping the Shabbat holy, as they have for
generations. Guided almost exclusively by the Torah, the Abayudaya daven
in their synagogues, usually made from mud huts, in four different
villages outside a town called Mbale. This page stands as a testament to
their ability to withstand total isolation -- and anti-Semitism -- in a
Ugandan village to celebrate the tenets of Jewish faith. Below are some of
the beautiful sights and sounds of the Abayudaya, as well as information
about assisting them and even visiting..." Here you may also order
Abayudaya kippot and hear their music (Ugandan tunes with Hebrew lyrics).
The four goals of the community are: * Complete a brick and mortar
synagogue to replace the deteriorating Moses Synagogue * Get a Torah
(achieved) * Receive a rabbi * Become less isolated (Abayudaya
Congregation, P.O. Box 225, Mbale, Uganda)

- Rules to Follow for Kosher Eating :
"Contrary to what many people believe, kosher food is not food that has been blessed by a rabbi and made okay to eat. Food is considered to be kosher if it has been selected and prepared in accordance with Jewish kashrut, or kosher, law."
- Did the Lost
Tribes of Israel land in Japan? A fasinating site which explores the
connection between ancient Israelite customs and Japanese ones; from the
site: "As I study the Bible, I began to realize that many traditional
customs and ceremonies in Japan are very similar to the ones of ancient
Israel, and I started to think that perhaps these rituals came from the
religion and customs of the Jews and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel who may
have come to ancient Japan. The following articles are concerning these
Japanese traditions which I think originated from the ancient Israelites."
